Secondary Schools

We already have well developed programmes for KS2 Primary School children & adults. Our aim over the coming year is to expand & develop the sustainable educational activities at HHP for secondary school age children, due to increasing interest. We have now run visits for both KS3 and A-level groups, but could easily adapt the programme to suit any academic level.

Essentially the programmes last about 3 hours and include the following:

  • Tour of HHP site highlighting renewable energy systems (wind & solar),  autonomous water systems, self-sufficiency (food), waste management (water & composting) (this session can incorporate a mapping exercise - Each student is given a partially drawn site map on which they mark site features that offer potential solutions relating to key sustainability topics).
  • Walk through one of the project member’s homes, highlighting key environmental features, and how they are designed to minimise energy use – included no central heating system!
  • Small exhibition and light refreshments in our new Sustainable Resource Centre (SRC) and a chance to experience using a compost toilet.
  • Interactive session – There are two main options:
Role play/debate about a contentious issue/ ‘hot’ political issue that has a link to what they have seen at HHP, such as windfarm developments or use of gas-guzzling cars versus alternatives
Quiz covering what they should have seen, and/or heard during visit

As an alternative to an interactive session, we can do an AV presentation, showing history of the development and explanation of how homes work.

If you would like to discuss a visit please contact Nick White on hhp@hockerton.demon.co.uk or call 01636 816902.
