Secondary Schools

School visits to Hockerton Housing Project include:

  • Tour of HHP site highlighting renewable energy systems (wind & solar),  autonomous water systems, self-sufficiency (food), waste management (water & composting).
  • Walk through one of the project member’s homes, highlighting key environmental features, and how they are designed to minimise energy use – included no central heating system!
  • Small exhibition and light refreshments in our Sustainable Resource Centre (SRC) and a chance to experience using a compost toilet.
  • Interactive session – There are two main options:
Role play/debate about a contentious issue/ ‘hot’ political issue that has a link to what they have seen at HHP, such as windfarm developments or use of gas-guzzling cars versus alternatives
Carbon Footprint Calculator – assesses the impact of their life style. We then relate this to what they have seen, and/or heard during visit and then they agree on ways to reduce their impact.

As an alternative to an interactive session, we can do an AV presentation, showing history of the development and explanation of how homes work.

If you would like to discuss a visit please email hhp@hockerton.demon.co.uk or call 01636 816902.

“My favourite part of the day was the debate at the end. It was all about wind turbines and whether or not they will ruin the landscape. It was taken from a proper debate on the same subject and some of us had opinions that were put towards the argument. This was really good fun as well as having a lot of information and truth to it.”

“At Hockerton I learnt all about how wind turbines work and how much they cost. I also learnt that the people who live there are perfectly normal and live normal lives. I am now realizing what a drastic change we have got to do to save the planet from global warming”.
