Design advice

Every project is different and our input will depend on what stage you are at, scope of the project, whether you are already working with a designer(s) and how much you are able to contribute yourself.

Our capabilities and areas of expertise include:

  • Environmental building (low carbon construction) to meet the highest energy-efficient standards; zero heating, zero CO2 standards & autonomous.
  • Technical information on the building envelope covering material choice, insulation, glazing and ventilation.
  • Analysis of heat gains/losses, heat input requirements and thermal capacities of buildings.
  • Water usage and collection capabilities from building and surrounds (including conservation considerations) – Filtration requirements and options. This could be extended to provide an autonomous water supply.
  • Autonomous waste water/sewage systems (e.g. reed beds & compost toilets).
  • Renewable energy generation – in particular wind and solar.
  • Projec Management
  • Landscape management to provide a degree of self-sufficiency & enhance biodiversity.
  • Eco-refurbishment
  • Monitoring of building performance including reference to our own bench mark data.

We are happy to work directly with clients or in collaboration with an architect or design team. This may extend to providing input and having communications with planners, building inspectors and structural engineers concerning technical issues.

Otherwise, if you would like to discuss our possible involvement with your project plans, please contact us by email (hhp@hockerton.demon.co.uk) or call 01636 816902.  If you have not visited Hockerton Housing Project before, we would recommend you do this, as it may well give you ideas for your plans; show you the potential that could be achieved and give you a good senses of our design approach. Otherwise we would be happy to meet you at your home, office or the proposed site.

If you represent a community project it maybe possible for you to receive up to 1.5 days of free technical advice – click here for more information.
