Other local places to visit

Newark and Sherwood's most famous inhabitant was, of course, Robin Hood, a name associated, with many local towns and villages.  For example, Edwinstowe, where Robin Hood and Maid Marian were said to have married; Blidworth with Will Scarlett's burial place and Maid Marian's cottage; Sherwood Forest and the Major Oak.

There are two very interesting market towns - historic Newark-on-Trent (7 miles from HHP) with important Civil War connections and the pretty little town of Southwell (2 miles from HHP), famous for its Bramley apple and with an imposing Norman minster (www.southwellminster.org.uk).

We would also thoroughly reccomend a visit to The Workhouse in Southwell - The Workhouse survives as the least altered example of its kind in existence today. Visitors can explore the segregated rooms and stairways as well as the master's quarters to discover the thought-provoking story of the 'welfare' system, created by the New Poor Law of 1834. The audio guide, based on archive records, brings the 19th-century inhabitants back to life in the empty rooms. Interactive displays address the issue of poverty through the years and across the country, while children's games illuminate the life of people who once inhabited the Workhouse.

You will also be able to discover a wealth of attractive villages, many of which have retained their special traditions - maypole dancing, the medieval system of Open Field Farming, the smallest pub and the Best Kept Phone Box in the world!!

A number of places are associated with famous names, such as Charles I, Byron, Darwin, Helen Cresswell, Kate Greenaway...
