Walking to HHP is only likely to happen if you have come via a bus to Southwell.
Walking from Southwell (which I have run and walk many times - website editor!) takes approximately 30minutes at a reasonable pace. Although the road is not ideal for walking due to lack of a dedicated path for much of the way, it can be a rather pleasant experience through rural Nottingham Countryside.
You may wish to be aware of the following on route:
• The best place to be dropped of by buses is Burgage Green (to minimise walking distance)
• Walk down Station Road from crossroads, directed to Hockerton (not a good sign!) passing Newcastle Arms and start of Southwell trail on your left.
• Cross over the bridge at the mill and look out for kingfishers!
• Using the path on the right hand side walk up to the Normanton crossroads (large signpost for Reg Taylor's Garden Centre).
• From here there is no footpath. Take care as you go up the hill as there is little verge.
• From the top of the hill you get excellent views of rolling countryside in front of you and behind views of Southwell and the Minster towers. On spring days you should hear skylarks, and may see a number of farmland birds including the yellowhammer, kestrel and pheasants. The verges are wide here often with many wild flowers.
• As you descend the hill on the other side you should catch glimpses of the HHP wind turbine and in winter the south facing conservatories of the HHP homes. Take care on the bends, particularly the one with iron rail - here it is safer to cross over to the left side temporarily until round the bend.
• From here is a slow descent to the HHP turning (right hand side) about 100 yards from the A617 road.
We are currently lobbying for the completion of pathways from Hockerton to Southwell to improve the road for pedestrians and cyclists.
Finally TAKE CARE & BE SEEN!
